Biographical Sketch of David Norfleet (1797-1868)

David6 Norfleet (James5, John4, John3, John2, Thomas1 Northfleete) was born 1797 in Nansemond County VA, and died 1868 in Burnet County TX. He married (1) Elizabeth Shackleford Abt. 26 May 1824 in Wayne County KY. She died 1852 in Green County MO. He married (2) Nancy L. Dresser 06 April 1854 in Miller County MO, daughter of Samuel Dresser and Nancy _____. She was born 06 April 1828 in MO, and died 30 August 1855 in Miller County MO. He married (3) Louisa Magill 03 November 1857 in Burnet County TX.

Notes for David Norfleet:

David was born in Nansemond County, Virginia in 1797 and died in Burnet County, Texas in 1868. He was a farmer and a merchant for most of his life. He farmed land and ran a dry goods store in Russell County, Kentucky for many years. In 1838, he immigrated to Polk County, Missouri where he established another dry goods store. Shortly before the Civil War, David again emigrated, this time to Burnett County, Texas. He first married in 1824; his first wife was Elizabeth Shackleford, by whom he had four children. Elizabeth died in Missouri in 1852. He subsequently married Nancy L. Dresser in 1854. Unfortunately, Nancy died a short time later, in 1855, at the age of only 27. In Texas, David married for the third and last time to a widow, Louisa Thomas, on 03 November 1857. He had no children by his second and third wives. Two of David's sons, James and William S. Norfleet, were the first Norfleets to reach California, having gone West in the Spring of 1850, during the California Gold Rush.

Notes for Louisa Magill:

Louisa's maiden name seems to have been Magill. Her first husband was named John Thomas, by whom she had at least six children. One of her sons, William H. Thomas died on 29 September 1856. Based upon probate records from Burnet Ciunty TX, John Thomas died in about 1855. On 03 November 1857, John Thomas's widow, Louisa Thomas, married David Norfleet in Burnet TX.

The following information was received, on 24 December 2001, from Karylon Russell (email: krussell@moment.net):

Karolyn wrote:

" ... According to the probate, he [John Thomas] died around 1855 with Louisa named as guardian for children:  James M., Elisha Franklin, William H., John A. (Jack), Marshall H. and Mary Jane Thomas.  The document specifically refers to heirs of John Thomas, decd., late of Wayne CO. KY, and specifically names Louisa as the MOTHER of these children.  Louisa took the oath of guardian 4-8-1855.   The estate wasn't finalized until 10-23-1858, but by that time, she had remarried---David Norfleet (m. 11-3-1857 in Burnet Co.)  Three of the minor heirs are living with David and Louisa on the 1860 Census for Burnet Co.

"One of the sons, William H., died 9-29-1856.  In May of 1864, Elisha Franklin Thomas was named guardian of the estates of the minor heirs of John Thomas.  Children named were Mary Jane, John A., and Marshall H.  Previous to his appointment, James P. Magill had been named guardian of the children. ...

"Louisa was supposed to have been a Magill, and marriage records in Wayne CO. KY indicate that Sarah, the WIFE of Calvin Cooper, was a GILL.  I have suspected that she was really a Magill, however, and a SISTER to Louisa.  If this is the same MRS. COOPER, this letter certainly indicates that was so.

"To help clarify the letter [Virlinder Norfleet's letter] -- the town of Burnet, TX was originally called Hamilton, named for the creek that runs through the town, but because Texas already had another Hamilton, the town's name was changed to Burnet, county seat of Burnet Co. TX. ... "
